If it seems like 24-year-old Cody Karey has been preparing his entire life for his musical career, that’s just because it’s true. From the moment the then-18-month-old rose from his high chair to warble along with “Achy Breaky Heart” at a Pizza Hut somewhere in northern British Columbia, and received a standing ovation, Karey’s destiny was sealed.
Not surprising considering Cody was singing before he even learned to talk. By six, he was performing country songs before audiences in and around his rural small town Fort St. James in a black hat, black shirt with silver collar tips, jeans, belt buckle and cowboy boots he bought with $25 he received as a gift from his grandmother, citing Alan Jackson as his favorite to a local journalist. By the time he was a teenager, Cody was taking the stage in big cities and had already appeared on television. It was around this time he discovered a love for the music of Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli. “I was pretty much certain that was the kind of music I wanted to do,” he says, “which was certainly weird for a kid from hockey-loving BC.”
Cody entered a David Foster talent competition, where he reached the finals, and first began the eight-year journey that ended up with the Grammy-winning producer/songwriter/record exec signing him to Verve Records. During his 8 year development period with Foster, Cody made countless on-stage appearances on some of the world’s biggest stages including Madison Square Garden in New York. These appearances allowed Cody to hone his craft by sharing the stage with a long list of world-class artists such as Michael Buble, Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, Cher, Donny Osmond, Paul Anka, Ruben Studdard, Katharine McPhee, Delta Goodrem, Peter Cetera, Phillip Bailey, Jackie Evancho and Charice to name a few. Cody Karey’s self-titled debut album emerged soon after, containing a number of love songs and ballads that truly showcase the power of Karey’s voice, notably his single “You Are The Song”.
Karey’s passion for love and romance, as well as his 15 years of classical voice training, often lead him to sing in romantic languages, including Spanish (the Latin-flavoured “Sentir”) and Italian (the operatic “Tu Sei”). Not just a nod to an international audience, according to Karey, but a way of expressing emotion through music and melody, rather than lyrics. “People love the romance of relying on the performance to tell them what an artist is trying to say without necessarily understanding all the words. I’ve always been someone who connects with chords and rhythm more than lyrics. It’s the part of the music that really speaks to me.”
In February of 2014, Karey joined Chinese Canadian Pop superstar, Wanting, on a North American theatre tour in support of his debut album. Karey continues to regularly perform for all types of audiences, where his powerful, soaring voice lends itself to music of all genres as his intimate personality and small-town approachability resonate with listeners of all ages.
On March 1st, 2015, Cody performed his moving single “You Are The Song” at the closing ceremony of the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, BC as a tribute to the over 3000 volunteers who’s hard work greatly contributed to the games’ success. Broadcast to thousands across the nation on TSN2, Karey’s homecoming performance was met with rave reviews. “I was honoured to have the opportunity,” says Karey of the experience, “It was real honour to be included in the closing ceremonies, and a dream come true to be able to perform in my home region. I thought of it as a thank-you to the people who have supported me from day one. I wouldn’t be here without them.”
Though he considers himself first and foremost a singer, music is not Karey’s only artistic passion. In January 2015, it was announced by CTV and Proper Television that Cody would be featured on the hit reality TV series “MasterChef Canada” as a season 2 finalist, and one of Canada’s most talented amateur cooks. Not surprising, considering that, according to Karey, inspiration for both his music and culinary creations is derived from the same influence; love and romance. “I’ve always dreamed of seeing my name up in lights as a successful restaurateur and as a musician.”
As of March 9th, 2015, Karey has cooked his way through to the top-12 of Canada’s biggest culinary competition, and continues to impress the judges. “If you keep cooking like this, you’re going to win this. The whole thing.” Said Chef Claudio Aprile, MasterChef Canada judge, of Karey’s “Fifth Dimension Pizza” with gorgonzola cream, sauteed wild mushrooms, figs and quail eggs; The winning dish in a recent Mystery Box challenge.
MasterChef Canada is the nations most watched reality TV series, drawing the eyes of over 1.5 million viewers per episode. The show airs Sundays on CTV at 7pm ET/PT.
With his culinary dreams well on their way to fruition, Cody now turns his attention back to his first love, music. He continues to establish his musical identity, and is currently in the conceptual stages of work on a sophomore album project. More determined than ever, Cody Karey is both a culinary and musical force to be reckoned with.
